MSP GAINS ASSURANCES OVER 2 SISTERS PLANT
Clare Haughey MSP is continuing to fight for jobs at the 2 Sisters chicken factory in Cambuslang after last week’s news that the company may close down the site.
In a conference call yesterday with Business Minister Paul Wheelhouse, Scottish Enterprise and the Scottish Government’s PACE team (Partnership Action for Continuing Employment), Ms Haughey discussed the ongoing situation at the Cambuslang plant and the efforts underway to safeguard jobs.
The morning after the announcement (9th February) Clare Haughey, herself a former union rep, visited the workforce and met with the management twice onsite in Cambuslang to discuss concerns.
While the company faces challenging conditions all parties involved in discussions are committed to minimising any potential redundancies and the Scottish Government and its agencies are exploring “all possible options” to support the business and workforce.
Commenting, Rutherglen MSP Clare Haughey said:
“I had a very constructive conference call yesterday afternoon with Paul Wheelhouse and his officials about the challenges facing 2 Sisters in Cambuslang. It’s clear the Scottish Government is leaving no stone unturned in helping the company and the workforce through what will undoubtedly be a worrying time.
“We’re talking about a significant number of jobs in the local economy. As local MSP I’m determined to explore options to keep these in Cambuslang and also minimising the risk of redundancies.
“As a former union rep myself, I know all too well the concerns that staff at the plant will have right now. It’s important that they get as much certainty as possible over their future – and I’m confident the company and agencies involved will put that at the centre of their discussions.
“Frankly we’re facing a really difficult situation. But I’m really heartened by the all hands on deck approach from government, from the company and from the workforce and unions on where we go from here.”
