FREE MUSIC TUTION MAKING A REAL DIFFERENCE TO CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE

The number of children and young people learning an instrument has gone up across Scotland since the Scottish Government removed fees for music lessons in 2021.

The total number of pupils across Scotland learning an instrument in schools has now risen to over 70,000 – around 30,000 higher that before fees were abolished in 2021.  Over 3,600 pupils in South Lanarkshire are benefitting from the Scottish Government policy of free music tuition.

Local MSP, Clare Haughey, has hailed the success of the policy in driving up the number of young Scots learning to play a musical instrument.   

Commenting, Clare Haughey said:

“The number of young Scots learning to play an instrument has almost doubled since this policy was introduced just five years ago – that is an immense achievement. 

“However, this isn’t just about playing musical instruments – it’s about giving our young people a lifelong skill, boosting their confidence and offering the opportunity to mix with their peers and other like-minded people. 

“South Lanarkshire pupils have been lucky to benefit from a dedicated and highly successful instrumental music service for many years, and it is fantastic that thanks to this Scottish Government policy they are able to access this excellent service without the barrier of tuition costs.”
