Local MSP, Clare Haughey has said the Scottish Government £2 bus fare cap will be a “game changer” for residents in Rutherglen and Cambuslang.

It comes as First Minister, John Swinney MSP, announced the £2 cap will apply to all single journeys across the west of Scotland, including Lanarkshire and Glasgow, from Monday 7th September.

Clare Haughey has welcomed the measure which she says will help encourage more people to travel on public transport, and put more money in people’s pockets across the area.

This follows the Scottish Government scrapping peak rail fares and expanding free bus travel to under 22s, ensuring more people can take advantage of Scotland’s public transport services for less.

Commenting, Clare Haughey said:

“The Scottish Government promised we’d have a £2 bus fare cap and from Monday people across Lanarkshire will have it – promise made and promise delivered.

“The cost of living remains one of the biggest challenges facing households, which is why reducing everyday costs is such an important priority for the Government.

“From September 7th single bus fares will be capped at £2 per journey – that will be vital in helping household budgets, and encouraging more people to travel by public transport.

“We’ve already scrapped peak rail fares, frozen rail fares, expanded free bus passes to all under 22s, and this cap will allow even more people to take advantage of our public transport services.”
