CALLS FOR ‘PHASE OUT’ GREYHOUND RACING BAN RAISED IN PARLIAMENT

Local MSP Clare Haughey has called on the Scottish Government to introduce a “phase-out” ban to greyhound racing.

The Rutherglen representative asked the Rural Affairs Cabinet Secretary about the government’s views on the welfare of greyhounds used in racing on Wednesday 10 May,

A Scottish Parliament committee is currently investigating the subject, and the Scottish Government have committed to consulting on it shortly.

Shawfield Stadium is the only licensed greyhound racing track in Scotland, but no races have taken place since Covid.

Its owners are thought to be considering demolishing the stadium, as in 2021 they made a request to South Lanarkshire Council for a screening opinion on the regeneration of the ground for housing.

Commenting, Clare Haughey MSP said:

“I have had long-standing concerns about the welfare of greyhounds that had been raced at Shawfield Stadium over recent years.

“From reports of dogs testing positive for drugs to the inherently dangerous layout of the tracks, nothing has been done to reassure me that the welfare of the greyhounds has been of paramount importance.

“With no races having taken place locally since the start of the pandemic, and with a decline in the industry in Scotland, I believe now is the best time to introduce a phase-out ban.

“I look forward to the Scottish Government’s consultation which is expected to be launched in the coming months.”
