CHANCELLOR SACKED? PRIME MINISTER SHOULD GO WITH HIM, SAYS LOCAL MSP
After less than 40 days in the job, the Chancellor has been sacked by PM Liz Truss – prompting calls for her to go too.
Their exponential downfall was caused by the UK Government’s reckless mini-Budget which resulted in a crisis in the markets, pension schemes were on the brink of collapse, and an emergency intervention by the Bank of England was needed.
The mini-Budget included a number of unpopular policies including tax cuts for the richest, caps of banker’ bonuses scrapped, and planned corporation tax rises were cancelled.
The Tory government has since U-turned on their plans to cut income tax and corporation tax – causing widespread ridicule whilst Liz Truss’ Friday press conference failed to reassure.
Commenting, Rutherglen MSP Clare Haughey said:
“Liz Truss has no credibility left and it’s now only a matter of time before she’s removed from office – either by Tory MPs or by doing the right thing and resigning.
“The disastrous policies in the Tory budget were hers. She trashed the UK economy – and she’s to blame for the damage done to people’s mortgages, pensions and incomes.
“As Westminster limps from one crisis to another, it has never been clearer that Scotland needs independence to escape this chaos.”
