LOCAL MSP BLASTS SCRAPPING OF FREE TV LICENSE FOR OVER 75s
Thousands of people across the Rutherglen Westminster constituency will be hit by the decision to scrap the free TV license for all over-75s, figures reveal. At the moment, the UK Government pays the £154.50 license fee for around 4.5 million pensioners, however they have now forced the BBC to take on the responsibility for the over-75 concession as part of a deal on the corporation’s funding.
SCOTTISH GOVERNMENT DRIVE TO END FUEL POVERTY IN SCOTLAND
Rutherglen MSP Clare Haughey has given her backing to the Scottish Government’s ‘world-leading’ Fuel Poverty Bill that was passed unanimously by MSPs last week (June 11). Under the plans, by law, no more than 5% of households in Scotland will be in fuel poverty by 2040 – ensuring families across Rutherglen and Cambuslang who struggle to heat their homes are given the right support.
OPT-OUT SYSTEM FOR DONATION GETS GO-AHEAD
Legislation to introduce an opt-out system of organ and tissue donation for deceased donors has been passed by the Scottish Parliament. The Bill was introduced in June 2018 to build on existing measures aimed at increasing the number of successful donations in Scotland.

Thousands of carers in South Lanarkshire have benefitted from new Carer’s Allowance Supplement (CAS) payments of up to £442 – introduced recently by the Scottish Government. Figures released last month show that 11,000 payments have been made to carers across the local authority region, totalling £2,432,000.

CASH FROM CRIMINALS GOES TO SOUTH LANARKSHIRE PROJECTS
Rutherglen MSP Clare Haughey has welcomed the news that the CashBack for Communities programme invested over £215,000 in local projects in South Lanarkshire last year. The Cashback for Communities scheme, which was established by the Scottish Government, reinvests criminal assets into community projects which support young people into positive destinations, diverting some away from potentially criminal or anti-social behaviour.
