FUNDING FOR CLYDE GATEWAY SECURED
The Scottish Government have confirmed to Rutherglen MSP Clare Haughey that Clyde Gateway will receive £1 million in capital funding for the 2024/25 financial year.
Clyde Gateway is a regeneration company which has been behind local projects like the Cuningar Loop Woodland Park, the pedestrian Smart Bridge linking Shawfield to Dalmarnock Station, and new businesses centres including the Red Tree Magenta at Shawfield and the Rutherglen Links Business Park at Farme Cross.
The Scottish Government has backed Clyde Gateway with over £200 million in investment since 2007.
Confirming £1 million in capital funding in a letter to local MSP Clare Haughey, the Minister for Local Government, Joe FitzPatrick, said:
“Thank you for your time meeting with me on Tuesday 6 February. As we discussed the Scottish Government greatly values the work of Clyde Gateway in supporting the communities in the Clyde Gateway area. I met again with their Chief Executive Martin McKay, and members of the team, on 31 January and welcomed the opportunity to see more of the regeneration they have delivered in the area.
“I discussed with Martin the impact of a reduced budget on Clyde Gateway’s operations from 2024/25 and as I advised during our meeting, having considered the options I have agreed an allocation of £1 m capital funding to Clyde Gateway in 2024/25.
“While I understand this is not the same level of funding that they have previously received, having discussed with them the Scottish Government’s challenging budget position and their requirements, I understand that this funding will in the short term enable Clyde Gateway to continue the delivery of their priority projects within their operating plan.
“We will continue to explore with Clyde Gateway potential ways in which we can support a more sustainable future funding model.”
Rutherglen MSP Clare Haughey said:
“I welcome this announcement from the Scottish Government who has backed Clyde Gateway with over £200 million over the years – without which the transformation we’ve seen in parts of Rutherglen would not be possible.
“I appreciate this level of funding is below what they received last year, but the Scottish Government’s capital budget, which funds initiatives like Clyde Gateway as well as our hospitals and infrastructure projects, has been cut by the UK Government by 10%.
“Since becoming an MSP, I have supported Scottish Government budgets which, against a backdrop of Westminster austerity, has allocated around £40 million to Clyde Gateway. In contrast, Scottish Labour have voted against this funding for Clyde Gateway at every single budget since I was elected.
“I will continue to work constructively with the Scottish Government for ongoing investment in Clyde Gateway to enable further regeneration locally.”
