LOCAL CYCLING PROJECT AWARDED WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS LEGACY GRANT

As the world’s best riders get set to go for gold at the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships in Glasgow, community cyclists across Scotland are also celebrating awards with a share of over £5 million.

Cycling projects in 18 different local authorities have now received investment from the Cycling Facilities Fund – including the Clyde Cycle Park in Cambuslang.

The Clyde Cycle Park, which was awarded £800,000 from the fund, is a charitable trust created as a partnership between Cambuslang Community Council, East Kilbride Road Club, Healthy n Happy, South Lanarkshire Council and South Lanarkshire Leisure & Culture.

The £8 million Cycling Facilities Fund aims to build on the growing interest in cycling by developing a network of facilities across the country and deliver a tangible benefit from the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships in Glasgow and Scotland.

It has been made possible through a £4 million commitment from Scottish Government and £4 million from sportscotland through National Lottery funds.

Commenting, Rutherglen MSP Clare Haughey said:

“I am delighted that the excellent Clyde Cycle Park has been one of the recipients of the Cycling Facilities Fund.

“The fund, which is a partnership between the Scottish Government and sportscotland, will support communities, like those in Cambuslang and Rutherglen, to be more active and deliver a lasting legacy following the 2023 Cycling World Championships.

“Being outdoors has a positive impact on health and mental wellbeing and helps us achieve our vision of an active Scotland where everyone benefits from sport and activity for their physical, mental and social health.”
